Step into the world of community heroes!

In this hands-on exploration course, students will get an inside look at the careers that keep our communities safe, supported, and running smoothly. From police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and dispatchers to public works and city services, students will discover what it takes to work in these high-impact roles. Through engaging activities, tours, demonstrations, and guest speakers, participants will learn how teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and service shape these exciting and essential careers.

Perfect for curious students who love action, helping others, and learning how things work behind the scenes!

Night One – Lakeville Fire Station 1

Students will:

• Tour the fire station and explore firefighting gear and equipment
• Learn how firefighters train, respond to emergencies, and work as a team
• Try hands-on activities such as using hoses (weather/conditions permitting), lifting tools, or practicing basic safety techniques
• Discover the path to becoming a firefighter, including schooling, certifications, and daily expectations
• Explore fire safety, emergency preparedness, and life in the firehouse
• Tour an ambulance and explore the lifesaving equipment EMTs use during medical calls 

Night Two – Lakeville Police Department

Students will:

• Learn the full path to becoming a police officer—from education and training to background checks, interviews, and the police academy
• Walk through a mock traffic stop and see why officers perform them, what they look for, and the tools/equipment used
• Watch a K-9 unit demonstration and learn how officers and their canine partners train together
• Understand the technology used in modern policing, such as radios, body cams, and squad car features
• Participate in a fitness and self-defense session, including the physical expectations for officers and introductory safety techniques
• Explore how officers work with dispatch and other emergency departments to keep the community safe
